Creative machines

2018 -

Richard Moss develops creative machines—functional art installations that merge technology, design, and performative experience. These works are hybrid by nature: part sculpture, part machine, and part stage. Each is conceived not only as an object but as an encounter, with Moss carefully shaping both the user experience and the visual language that defines its identity.

Commissioned by leading brands including Glenmorangie, Bombay Sapphire, and Moët Hennessy, the machines occupy contexts that range from intimate activations to large-scale immersive environments. Though their applications vary, they share a common vocabulary: moving components, motorised systems, electrical elements, and bespoke software scripted to animate each sequence. Functionality becomes choreography, engineering becomes theatre.

The machines oscillate between spectacle and utility. They dispense, mix, measure, reveal—performing useful tasks with precision—yet in doing so they captivate audiences with drama, rhythm, and play. Moss’s interest lies in this duality: how a necessary function can be transformed into an act of wonder.

By positioning them as functional artworks, Moss reframes machines as living installations—playful, choreographed, and alive. They embody Rogue Projects’ ethos: to reimagine everyday objects and processes through invention, wit, and the possibilities of engineering as an artistic medium.

The Mechanical Mixologist performs the act of cocktail-making through mechanical choreography. Motors and arms are precisely scripted, each gesture programmed as a theatrical sequence—pouring, shaking, stirring. Commissioned by luxury drinks brands, the work reflects Moss’s interest in how ritual can be translated into engineered form, where precision mechanics become a form of performance.

The Mix Machine fashions a classical yet futuristic jukebox into a mobile machine where drinks are accompanied by custom media and mechanical theatre. The Mix Machine invites audiences to participate directly, blending technology and spectacle. With its programmed electrical system and moving mechanisms, the machine makes visible the unseen rhythms of mixology. At its core is user experience—Moss designs not only the object but also the choreography of interaction, merging play, spectacle, and performance.

The Dispensary won Best in Show and Best Technology at the Hospitality Design Awards. Created to integrate seamlessly into architectural space, the Dispensary combines three unique motorised systems, each controlled by bespoke software sequences. Liquids are dispensed with exact choreography, transforming a hidden utility into a staged performance. Alongside the mechanism sits a mechanical infinity space—mirrored architecture that extends the gesture into boundlessness. Commissioned for brand activations, the work exemplifies Moss’s ability to render the functional spectacular.
