The Tennis Ball

Richard Moss’ practice often begins with the everyday object. His relationship with the tennis ball started on the court, but it evolved into a study of reinvention. Moss transformed the familiar sphere into hearO, a portable speaker engineered from reclaimed balls — a design that merged sustainability with playful invention.

Moss transformed the familiar sphere into hearO, a portable speaker engineered from reclaimed balls — a design that merged sustainability with playful invention. hearO has since partnered with leading brands including the BBC, Netflix, and Wilson, and was placed at SFMOMA and sold through its store. These collaborations underline Moss’ approach to the tennis ball not simply as sporting equipment but as raw material — one with untapped potential beyond the court.

The logic of reuse extended into his visual practice. With British Rubbish, Moss turned discarded materials into critical artworks, reimagining waste as a site of humour and commentary. In parallel projects with brands such as Vodafone, he explored how objects and technology mediate connection in contemporary life.

Across these works, the tennis ball becomes more than a sporting relic. It is a point of departure — an emblem of Moss’ approach to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, uniting play, design, and art.
